Abilities Services, Inc. (ASI) announces MCED “Bright Star Award”

ASI Bright Star Award

ASI Bright Star Award

Crawfordsville, In – Abilities Services, Inc. (ASI) was presented with the Montgomery County Economic Development (MCED) “Bright Star Award” for Outstanding Corporate Citizenship.
For 15 years under the leadership of Steve Gooch, ASI has grown and created a variety of new programming and resources for individuals with disabilities and similar disadvantages in Clinton, Montgomery, and Tippecanoe Counties.
On March 1, 2009, ASI appointed Robert Cook to the position of Executive Director after Mr. Gooch informed the Board in 2008 of his desire to retire late in 2009.   Mr. Gooch will continue as Director of Business Development and provide support through the transition period.
Steve’s advocacy efforts along with Bob’s organizational and creative efforts played a critical role in the recent development of innovative new programs, such as Respite, which started in June, and the absorption of the Montgomery County Day Care program now provided at ASI’s Concord facility.
Steve’s desire for a continuation of a seamless transition for the consumers led him to give the Board advance notice of his future plans.  A visible and articulate champion for the field of challenged individuals, Steve will continue to serve Abilities Services focusing on finalizing the new ASI facility planned for Clinton County in Frankfort, and consolidating ASI’s two service locations in Lafayette to the Howarth Center.

Indiana Says ‘No Thanks’ to Cap and Trade

This week Congress is set to release the details of the Waxman-Markey American Clean Energy and Security Act, a bill that purports to combat global warming by setting strict limits on carbon emissions. I’m not a candidate for any office-now or ever again-and I’ve approached the “climate change” debate with an open mind. But it’s clear to me that the nation, and in particular Indiana, my home state, will be terribly disserved by this cap-and-trade policy on the verge of passage in the House.

Energy & Quality of Life

Many of our local companies still employ the majority of their associates despite this economic downturn. Over 90% of Montgomery County residents still have a job to go to although they might not be seeing many overtime hours.

Montgomery County is fortunate to have a diverse business base and we have added around 100 quality jobs over the last 6 months.  This has helped even out some of the job losses we’ve experienced over the same time period. With that being said, we are still twice as high in unemployment as we were this time last year.
