Sommer Metalcraft - Hard Wired!

Three generations of the Sommer family have owned and operated the Sommer Metalcraft Corporation since 1935 when O.W Sommer bought the company, formerly known as Jeschke Wire Specialty.

O.W took the company from 5 employees to over 200 employees as he acquired other wire businesses like Crown Products in Indianapolis, which became the second division of Sommer Metalcraft

In 1969 O.W. retired as president and his son, Jon W. Sommer replaced him. In 1985 the corporation decided to expand south and opened a division in Auburn, Alabama, called SMC South. By the early 1990’s, the company had grown to over 350 employees with sales of over $30 million.

Reporting an amazing average production wage of $75,000 per year, Nucor is certainly one of the best all around employers in the state. Their technological breakthroughs have resulted in opportunities to make steel faster, more efficiently, and more environmentally friendly than ever before. Nucor Steel, in Crawfordsville, was the first thin-slab cast mill in the world.

Eighty five years in Crawfordsville and still the number one employer in Montgomery County with over 1400 employees!

RR Donnelley started operations in Crawfordsville in 1921 as the company’s first “country” plant. Founded by Richard Robert Donnelley in 1864, the company grew to be the largest printer in the United States with 25 domestic plants and international plants in Brazil, Mexico, China and Europe. In 2004 the firm merged with the Moore-Wallace Corporation.

For many years the Crawfordsville Plant has produced millions of best selling novels, reference books, school books, children’s books and Bibles.
