Three generations of the Sommer family have owned and operated the Sommer Metalcraft Corporation since 1935 when O.W Sommer bought the company, formerly known as Jeschke Wire Specialty.

O.W took the company from 5 employees to over 200 employees as he acquired other wire businesses like Crown Products in Indianapolis, which became the second division of Sommer Metalcraft

In 1969 O.W. retired as president and his son, Jon W. Sommer replaced him. In 1985 the corporation decided to expand south and opened a division in Auburn, Alabama, called SMC South. By the early 1990’s, the company had grown to over 350 employees with sales of over $30 million.

In 1999, Jon’s son, Scott Sommer took over as President of the company continuing the family ownership with several family members involved in the business as shareholders, members of the Board of Directors and/or employees.

Sommer fabricates wire into custom parts for many kinds of products to include product display racks and store fixturing just to mention a few.

The community is fortunate to have home grown companies like Sommer who contribute in many ways to the wealth of Montgomery County. Locally owned companies that have been around as long as Sommer, are especially valuable to our economy. They create an extra bounce in their economic impact by retaining profits locally, reinvesting locally and providing community leadership.

Sommer has been a contributor to MUFFY since it’s inception and a consistent Pacer Setter participant in donations for the construction of the Boys and Girls Club. Many company employees are local board members and the company is a corporate sponsor of the Strawberry Festival.

Scott Sommer currently serves on the Montgomery County Economic Development Board of Directors and will be the Chair of our Retention Committee beginning next year. The MCED retention committee is responsible for making sure we are doing all we can as a community to support our existing companies. That task will include oversight of the Presidents Club Breakfasts, the MCED Bright Future project and the marketing campaign to attract and retain a skilled workforce. He will take over from Roy Kaser of CEL&P who has provided excellent leadership of that committee for several years.

We are fortunate to have community leaders like Mr. Sommer and locally owned companies such as Sommer Metalcraft. They provide longstanding support for the community and take pride in the Montgomery County lifestyle.
